Buyers Guide to the Radiant Heater [Reviews 2019]

The three most important points in brief

Electric radiant heater Gas, Indoor & Outdoor Infrared Heater

What is a radiant heater?

Heater

caption id=”attachment_167″ align=”alignright” width=”300″] Heater[/caption]

A radiant heater can be operated electrically or with gas and is a high-temperature radiant heater. The heating energy is generated on or in the radiant component, usually made of metal, and then radiated at a high temperature.

A radiant heater can generate very high temperatures and therefore always has a metal safety grid in front of the heating rods as protection against burns. Also, it must be ensured that there is sufficient distance to other objects during installation. Radiant heaters are always used when heating energy is required over a greater distance or to a greater extent.

What types of radiant heaters are there?

There are three types of radiant heaters:

Electrically powered radiant heaters

As an electrically operated heating system, the radiant heater is part of the radiant heating system. This means that the generated heat is radiated and warms surfaces and not the room air. The electric radiant heater is based on infrared light and generates short-wave infrared light of class C, which provides a particularly pleasant feeling of warmth on the skin.

The long-wave radiation penetrates surfaces particularly deeply and ensures that the heat is perceived directly. The heating elements are also known as heating coils and consist of a low-impedance wire which emits heat directly from the radiant heater when heated. Directly behind the heating coil, also called glowing body, there is a mirror, which can direct the direction of the infrared radiation. In front of this is the above-mentioned touch protection to protect against burns, as temperatures of several hundred degrees can prevail here. Around the glow body small ceramic tiles or a ceramic core are attached, which protects against short circuits and represents an additional insulation.

The special form of the electrically operated radiant heater is the red light lamp, which is known to many in the medical field. It is used to allow deep heat to penetrate into the human tissue in order to relieve tension or muscle strain. Class C infrared radiation, i.e. particularly short-wave light, is also used here.

From a technical point of view, a light bulb is also one of the electrically operated radiant heaters, because here too the energy used is converted into heat radiation. However, here approx. 5% of the energy used is in the visible light spectrum and not, as with infrared light, in the light spectrum invisible to the human eye above the red range. (Looking through a prism) Protective gas is enclosed in the bulb, which allows higher temperatures of the filament.

Numerous commercially available electrically operated radiant heaters on the market feature a quartz heating rod that can generate and withstand even higher temperatures than the pure heating rod.

Gas-powered radiant heaters

The brand protected heating mushroom is the classic among the gas-powered radiant heaters and is mostly used in outdoor areas, beer gardens, on terraces or for all other outdoor occasions. The technically correct term for these devices is catalytic construction heater. The heat is generated without an open flame by a catalytic combustion of liquid gas.

The whole process takes place in a catalyst material and produces carbon dioxide. Because of these exhaust gases, many communities have already banned the use of gas-fired radiant heaters. Typical application areas besides the gastronomically used outdoor area are camping or leisure, but also as hall or workshop heating.

]
In principle, when using such a heater, sufficient air supply must be ensured so that the exhaust gases can escape into the environment and do not remain in the heated room. This would lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which is usually fatal.

Classical radiant heater

The household electricity is also the energy source here, but the device does not work with short-wave infrared light but simply heats a heating rod or a heating wire. The heat emitted is less pleasant to the user than infrared light.

But also these devices are suitable for the short-term heating of living rooms, especially however for small rooms such as garage, party cellar or garden house. Here, too, the heat is radiated, which, depending on the model, can still be distributed in the room with a fan. Thus one combines here the radiant heating with the convection heating in one device. The use is due to the very compact construction and connected with it with the only very limited range only in the interior meaningful.

How does a radiant heater?

work?
The radiant heater is a device that emits heat via a filament or a heating coil. It can be charged with electricity or gas. The device belongs to the group of radiant heaters and emits the generated heat in the form of radiant heat. The operating principle can be described in simple terms as follows:
“Heating by radiated heat energy”.

Physically speaking, the radiant heater works on the basis of the principle of radiation exchange. In terms of the radiation content, the device exchanges the radiation with its surroundings. Compared to convection heating, there is no or very little dust turbulence or air circulation generated when the room air is heated. The lower room air temperature is another advantage of the radiant heater, because the subjective heat sensation is higher than with conventional heating and the room temperature can be lowered by approx. 3 degrees.

How hot do radiant heaters get?

Depending on the type of device, radiant heaters, especially infrared radiant heaters with a quartz heating rod, can heat up to 900 degrees Celsius. For this reason, a protective grid must also be attached to the heaters. At a distance of approx. 1 metre, the temperature will settle to body temperature. The exact details of the achievable temperatures can be found in each operating manual.

Costs of a radiant heater

The costs for a radiant heater depend on the output of the device in watts, the heating duration and the type of energy used (electricity or gas). And of course, as with many other things, it also depends on the personal requirements of the heater and specific features.

What does a radiant heater cost?

The prices for radiant heaters can vary greatly depending on the type of device, its intended use and the energy source selected. Starting from approx. 50 Euro for radiant heaters for the changing table over radiant heaters for the indoor area for approx. 200 to 400 Euro, up to large radiant heaters for the outdoor area for up to approx. 800 Euro.

What does a radiant heater consume in terms of electricity?

Electrically operated models are available from 500 W upwards. As an example for the electricity consumption we take the maximum power of 2000 Watt as calculation basis and an electricity price of 26 Cent per kilowatt hour. Accordingly, the use of a 2000 watt radiant heater at maximum output costs 52 cents per hour.

For the gas radiant heaters, it is assumed that the power output for domestic use is between 5 and 12 kW. With the devices with 12 kW one counts on the average with a gas consumption of approx. 1000 gram gas per hour. However, this is the consumption with the control turned up at maximum. If one assumes also here again from a middle value, then one can operate with a 11 kg bottle liquid gas approx. 25 to 50 hours a middle-sized radiant heater in middle stage in the outside area.

Buy radiant heater

What to consider when buying a radiant heater?

The most important question before buying is whether the radiant heater is intended for indoor or outdoor use. Gas radiant heaters should only be used outdoors. As an infrared heater you can use the device both indoors and outdoors.

Electric radiant heaters are easy to operate and handle, while gas radiant heaters require the cylinder to be replaced with liquid gas and connected. And not to forget, the exchange and transport of gas cylinders, which can weigh several kilos.

If a mobile device is needed, then a heater with wheels should be used. Also the simple stowing over the summer is a point, which should be considered with the purchase.
As with all other electrical appliances, safety must be the top priority. The corresponding CE certification states that the manufacturer has undergone a voluntary safety test which confirms the safety of the equipment. You should also observe the GS seal. Tested safety means that the device may be operated in the EU and complies with the local safety regulations.

For outdoor radiant heaters, the IP protection class must also be observed. It indicates whether rain drops may or may not fall on the device. Splash-proof means that the radiator may only be installed in a weather-protected area if this is specified by the protection class.
An operating manual in German must be enclosed with the unit. It is also advantageous if you can register your possible warranty claims within Germany with a partner or specialist dealer. And, of course, the procurement of spare parts with short distances is also an advantage.

As a rule, brand manufacturers have exactly these requirements. Therefore one must weigh well with a No-Name product whether the more favorable price justifies the renouncement of Kundenservice or warranty.
Finally, one very important aspect: the protective grille in front of the heating elements, regardless of the type, must be available and made of high-quality metal. The grille is an important safety aspect and protects all users from burns, as the heating elements can heat up to several hundred degrees Celsius.

What better heater or fan heater?

At the push of a button, the radiant heater transfers the heat directly to the surfaces of the environment within very short start-up times. Heat is therefore available practically immediately. Within a small radius of action around the device, the heat is very intensely noticeable. From a distance of only 1 meter, however, it drops to body temperature.

Depending on the dimension of the radiant heater, it may be that a person sitting a little further away does not feel the heat as intensely and a fan would then be practical. This is installed in a fan heater and can either be permanently switched on or temporarily switched on. The ideal combination is the device with an optional fan.

However, this only makes sense if the room is somewhat larger or if the heat is to be distributed in the room in a very short moment. In the bathroom or as a terrace radiator the fan actually makes little sense, here a good infrared radiant heater is completely sufficient.

Which radiant heater for the bathroom?

Since most people are in the bathroom without or with little clothing, the infrared radiant heater is the best choice here. Who would like to have it very cuddly warm in the bathroom, for example when winding the offspring, falls back on a quartz infrared radiant heater. This heating rod becomes even warmer than with the normal infrared device and is exactly correct for the sensitive babies.

The radiant heater should be mounted above body height on the wall or, depending on the model, on the ceiling. The minimum distance to the next object must be at least 1 meter. In case of doubt, however, the manufacturer’s instructions provide more detailed information on installation and commissioning.

Which terrace heater is recommended?

The answer to this question depends above all on the size of the terrace and its use, whether private or commercial. For the classic single-family house terrace, where you sit with your family for breakfast or drink a beer with friends in the evening, a normal radiant heater warms you up perfectly. Who would rather rely on the pleasant warmth of the infrared radiation, chooses a device with infrared warmth.

In addition to the pleasant feeling of warmth, this also adds a particularly warming sensation to the skin. A device with a fan is not recommended here. The assembly should take place weather-protected at the wall and in sufficient distance to furniture, awnings and persons.

If the terrace area is larger and you still want to distribute cosy warmth on it at any place, then the gas-powered radiant heater is recommended. With liquid gas operated, you have a large area that the heater can supply and for many hours heat at the touch of a button.

The emitters are naturally also suitable for the commercial need, in addition, for associations and groups, which sit gladly outside. But pay attention absolutely to the position when setting up, the place should be absolutely wind-protected. The beam angle should still be kept in mind, this information can be found on the packaging or in the operating instructions. It tells you which area the device heats up when it is mounted on the ceiling.

Gas heater

gas radiant heaters

What gas is used for radiant heaters?

Gas-powered radiant heaters are operated with the so-called liquid gas. This is usually a mixture of butane and propane that can be transported in a gas cylinder. Propane also works at high sub-zero temperatures. Butane is more suitable for the summer because it does not evaporate at a temperature of 0 degrees. It is not usable below 0 degrees Celsius, but has a higher calorific value than propane.

Mixing the two gases gives the largest performance spectrum and allows the respective advantages of both gases to be optimally exploited.

Where to rent radiant heaters?

If you only need a radiant heater temporarily or want to try out a certain device first, you can rent a radiant heater. In many large cities there are several DIY stores and most of them offer a rental service for radiant heaters. The Yellow Pages can also provide information on suppliers in the region. Sometimes you will also find party and event organisers offering their own equipment for rent. Just give us a call and ask or visit your nearest DIY store or garden centre.

How expensive is a radiant heater?

Depending on the model, model and equipment, radiant heaters are already available from approx. 50 euros. The prices in the upper range can go for gas-operated radiant heaters for the commercial outdoor area also up to several hundred euros. Design variants are also times around 1000 euro available. Cheap offer lure frequently with particularly low prices far under the market average, from their acquisition is however generally for safety reasons disadvised.

Installation and operation of a heater

What to consider when installing a radiant heater?

During installation, all instructions given by the manufacturer in the operating instructions should be observed. It is also essential to ensure that the unit is kept at a safe distance from flammable surfaces and objects.

Where to place a radiant heater?

Depending on the model and manufacturer, as well as the intended use, models for wall mounting, ceiling mounting, mobile devices or floor lamps are available.
6.3 At what height should a radiant heater be installed?
In principle, a minimum distance of 1 metre from furniture, textiles and other flammable materials must be maintained. The radiant heater must also always be installed above body height, otherwise it will be too hot around the user’s head.

Who repairs radiant heaters?

If you still have the manufacturer’s warranty, he will also tell you how and where the repair or replacement of the radiant heater takes place. Otherwise, many compact radiant heaters often cannot be repaired at all. They consist of so few individual parts that no repair is worthwhile, if for example the heating spiral gives up or the housing is damaged.

Heating radiator around changing table and baby

Why do you use a radiant heater on a baby?

Babies cool down much faster than adults. It is therefore necessary to keep the small bodies warm at all times and protect them from the cold. When changing diapers, it is usual to purchase a radiant heater with infrared radiation that ensures that the baby feels comfortably warm while lying down and does not cool down or even catch a cold.

No products found.

The quartz heating rod and the infrared radiation make an ideal heating device, especially for the changing table, and many models can be folded up to save space or mounted on the ceiling.

Which radiant heater is recommended for a baby?

The same recommendations apply here as for the purchase of a normal heater. Safety comes first. Useful features are, for example, the automatic switch-off function, which ensures that the appliance switches itself off automatically after 10 minutes, so that parents can take full care of their baby without worrying about forgetting to switch it off. It is also advisable for the youngest to adjust the heating output individually, because not every baby needs full warmth immediately. And the season also plays a role.

Where to attach a radiant heater to the changing table?

For safety reasons, it is generally not advisable to fasten the AM changing table. The radiant heater should be mounted either on the wall or on the ceiling. As a mobile stand radiator it can be rolled onto the changing table. The minimum distance is extremely important also with babies, it applies at least 1 meter. Under the ceiling it applies a distance of approx. 35 cm to keep and up to the next wall it should be also at least 20 cm.

Until when do you use a radiant heater for your baby?

As long as the baby is wrapped or bathed, the radiant heater can also be used. In principle, however, the individual sensation applies here. If you have the feeling that the baby feels the heat is too strong, you can either lower the radiant heater or leave it out altogether. You know your offspring best, so just rely on your feeling.
